Kylie sighed. It seemed that the nekomata insisted on being a distraction. Not that she was actually looking forward to the pain of the explosion, or the feelings of irrational, unexplainable fear that she knew would come as soon as she saw the flames.
She couldn't explain why her "phobia" only came into effect upon seeing the flames. She could even feel sparks coming off of her when she got angry enough and she STILL wouldn't panic unless she actually saw them.
Kylie was impressed however, when she saw Patchouli expand the mousehole to release Sai's hand. She wondered if she might eventually be able to learn such things herself... She had a natural ability to use water magic, and was quite good at it, but perhaps it would be a good idea to learn other kinds as well...
Then again, that was a matter for when her curse was resolved. And Kylie was beginning to get a glimmer of hope... Most magicians were Youkai after all so-
Suddenly, a thought struck her. What if not only the one who had cursed her was still alive, but what if Yukiko was as well? As far as Kylie knew, Yukiko had been human when they'd known each other, but... Even now, Kylie had difficulty telling whether someone was a youkai or not herself unless there was something in their appearance to tell her so. And even if Yukiko had been human, that might have changed...
Even now, Kylie likely wouldn't have actually known Patchouli was a youkai if it hadn't been for what she'd heard. She might have guessed, due to the simple fact that most magic-users were youkai, but there obviously were exceptions, such as that annoying girl, Marisa Kirisame.
Kylie was feeling more and more hopeful now. The chances of Yukiko being alive were low since she'd disappeared all that time ago, but it wasn't impossible. If the one who'd cursed Kylie had imprisoned Yukiko, then finding him might mean finding Yukiko... These thin strands of hope were enough that Kylie was no longer willing to die. She was determined to live, and find out the truth!

Sai was amazed by the magic Patchouli used to release her hand.
"Thank you," she said, relieved.
And now she knew what this meant. Kylie was going to go through a lot of pain. It was her choice, and Sai respected that, but even so, she didn't want this to happen to her friend.
Not knowing what else to do, she just sat down and closed her eyes.

Patchouli watched Sai until the Nekomata sat down, then she turned her attention back to the enlarged mouse-hole. Instead of just sealing the hole itself she traced a symbol on the ground in front of it and muttered an incantation that transmuted all the air in the wall into stone, which would close up any tunnels the hole's inhabitants might have made inside. It was a rather gruesome solution if one imagined what it would do to the mice but it would save Sakuya from having to ferret them out.
Kylie's curse was a much bigger problem. Patchouli was sure that she would eventually be able to give the water Youkai what she wanted but whether Kylie would survive the process or... otherwise was a big question mark. The magician began to make the necessary preparations, creating a barrier sigil in the center of the library that would contain the curse's flames if they turned out to be exceptionally intense and summoning a few of her self-writing books to gather the information she required.
When she was done, she went over to the slime creature that held Kylie and her watery enclosure. The magician intended to place some enchantments on the water Youkai that would theoretically disable the curse if it became too intense for her to handle and that would keep her alive after that, but she would let Kylie decide if she wanted the spells.
"I have some protective spells that I wish to use on you before we begin the tests. As with the counter-curse, however, you can proceed without them."

Augen returned from his trek... For now, at least, and just waited and watched. Maybe he'd be able to ask more questions once this issue was solved... But for now, he'd best be patient.

Kylie watched as Patchouli sealed the mousehole, and then began preparations for the activation of the curse. She then asked Kylie if she wanted to use some protective spells during the process. "If there's any way that this can be less painful than I already know it's going to be, then I think I'll take it. So yes, please give me the protective spells."

Patchouli nodded at Kylie's agreement and traced a glowing green symbol on the slime creature. Waves of power coursed through its viscous substance and caused it to rise into the air while allowing Kylie to pass through its bottom and onto the floor as it did so. The creature and the water it held then floated to a point above the sigil Patchouli had prepared earlier, where it would wait until it was needed. If the flames from Kylie's curse became too intense the creature would fall on her and immerse her in its contents once again.
The magician then placed a finger on Kylie's wet forehead and traced a blue symbol while muttering an incantation, a delayed healing enchantment that would rapidly regenerate Kylie's skin and flesh if even a bit was consumed by the flames of the curse. If that wasn't enough protection there was always the option of submerging her again.
A red symbol then followed, this time on the back of Kylie's neck, that would numb any physical pain the curse might cause. If the water Youkai still felt any pain then Patchouli would know that the curse affected its victim's mind as well as her body. The spell would prevent Kylie herself from judging the extent of the curse's damage to her body but Patchouli would keep a close eye on her to make sure things stayed under control.
The final touch was a smaller yellow symbol that went on Kylie's left hand. This was an awakening spell that would allow Patchouli to arouse the water Youkai from any sleeping effects or mystical nightmares the curse might cause, no matter how powerful they were. It would also be able to wake Kylie if she passed out from the pain of the curse but Patchouli resolved to heal the girl completely before waking her if that function became necessary.
When she was done, she motioned for Kylie to stand in the center of the protective sigil and prepared a minor fire spell that she would use to activate the curse.

Augen sat and watched, spinning the cylinder of his Judge as he waited. He wanted to see this. It intrigued him... And more importantly, it might help him. If he needed to do something, such as find the wicked sorcerer or something of that nature, he needed to know just what he was up against.

Once Patchouli was done with the spells, Kylie did as she was beckoned to, stepping in the center of the sigil, and then simply waited for it to be over with...

(And skip again. Sai's not interested in opening her eyes.)

After taking a deep breath, Patchouli began to chant the incantation she'd prepared. Two points of red light appeared to either side of Kylie, about a foot away, and they began to circle the water Youkai at an increasingly rapid pace. Soon after, thin columns of fire about the height of Kylie's knees burst from the circling points of light and left trails of fire that eventually rose to the same level. In about a minute the Youkai was surrounded by a low 'hedge' of fire that wouldn't harm her unless she tried to touch it but which would still produce enough heat for her to feel.
The spell was actually a defensive enchantment as Patchouli was reluctant to risk hurting Kylie before the actual tests began. However, if it was the fear of fire that caused the curse to react, then something would happen even if the water Youkai didn't get burned.
((OOC: A quick recap of the spells Kylie's got on her: 1. There's a major regeneration seal on her forehead that's far more powerful than the healing circle from earlier. She should be able to regenerate even from 100% third degree burns in seconds while it lasts.
2. There's a pain nullifying seal on the back of her neck that will remove physical pain but not sensations of heat. Mental or spiritual pain is unaffected.
3. There's a lightning seal on Kylie's left hand that will allow Patchy to jolt her awake no matter how deeply she falls into unconsciousness.
Finally, the slime water balloon from earlier will fall on Kylie if any of her flames reach the ceiling.
Any fire that Kylie or her curse release will be absorbed by the barrier sigil. I will decide if overload conditions occur and at what point. Other than that, do as you wish.
Heh, OOC post longer than IC post. A first for me!))

Kylie watched, as the red lights came into existence, but not actual fire... And then there was fire. As soon as she saw the flames, irrational, overpowering panic welled up inside her. Then her own flames began coming. There was no pain, but it still felt quite hot... No solace to her now irrational mind however.
If there hadn't been the additional "hedge" of fire surrounding her, Kylie would have simply tried to run away, despite that it would be futile, and bang into the walls of the barrier. As it was, she fell to her knees even as she let out a terrified scream. Her face showed her emotions clearly... Pure , undiluted terror. All rational thought had been completely buried. And it was escalating, along with the flames...
