It was midday and the sun was exceptionally bright. The sky was almost completely clear but an observant person would have noticed a solitary red cloud drifting lazily through the blue, far up enough that it was difficult for most humans to see.
Lucien wasn't too fond of being outdoors in the sun but he'd been forcefully evicted from his cave by a monstrous mountain of muscle that just happened to be packing laser beams. It was the only cave in this part of Gensokyo and while Lucien had chosen it for privacy its isolation did make it difficult to replace. He certainly hadn't expected to lose it so quickly.
He was going as slowly as he could to keep from overtaking his puff of red mist. While he had enough magic in it to keep it from blowing away, moving too fast would cause it to drift off by itself and that would expose him to the dreaded sunlight.
Absorbed in his thoughts, he didn't notice the cluster of white puffballs in front of him and the next thing he knew he was dodging for his life as these weren't just balls of cotton or fur. They were kedama, a relatively weak but still rather dangerous type of creature native to Gensokyo, and they had the troublesome habit of shooting anything that came close even if it was harmless. While Lucien usually had an easy time with them the sheer number of kedama in this one spot meant that he was severely outgunned.
Naturally his mist couldn't keep up and soon his entire body felt like it was on fire. He tried his best to keep flying but without magic to help his wings he quickly lost altitude and fell straight down, bouncing off the puffballs as he went. The last thing he saw was a field of orange fluff rising rapidly around him and then he landed on something soft.
.........................................................
For the Alpha Kedama it was a day like any other. Well, like the other two at least. It had woken up in the morning and had been attacked by a couple of monsters. While the attacks hadn't harmed it, they had somehow made it cough up numerous balls of fluff that had shot the monsters and killed them. All this was really new and curious and the Alpha hadn't been able to figure any of it out even after spending two whole days thinking about it.
The bright sunlight made everything look a little blurry, which the Alpha began to wonder about. It tried to go over to the nearest rock to see if the blurriness had made it soft but its body refused to move at anything more than a snail's pace. Curious.
Something hit it hard from above and it vomited out another stream of its puffballs. This time it wasn't as concerned about the puffballs as it was about the thing that had dropped on it. It tried to shake the thing off but it couldn't turn its body fast enough, then it had the idea of turning upwards and sure enough it felt the thing drop off as soon as it was halfway up. It continued turning until it could see the ground under it and it was surprised to see what looked like a child with wings.
Curiouser and curiouser. Perhaps it would ask the child what it was. One could never learn too much about the world.
"HELLO. WHAT ARE YOU?"
....................................................
Lucien was in the middle of recovering from what he thought was a minor concussion when the voice nearly blew his eardrums out. Or rather, it really did but the shade allowed his regeneration to kick in and heal the ear damage along with what might have been a broken spine from landing on the back of his neck.
Without opening his eyes he shouted at the voice to turn the volume down a little. Then he opened his eyes and looked up to see a (°д°) face nearly ten times the size of his body on a seemingly endless expense or orange fur. He recalled the orange forest he'd seen during the first part of his fall and he immediately made the connection. Unnerved, he quickly released as much red mist as he could to cover himself and to prepare for a counterattack if one was needed.
..............................................
The Alpha would have smiled if it could move its mouth or eyes. This child was proving to be the most interesting of its discoveries yet. It decided to oblige the child's demand by repeating its question in a voice that was softer, but still loud enough for the child to hear it anywhere in the cloud of mist. Perhaps, it decided, it should introduce itself as well.
"I ask again, what are you? I myself am called Alpha. Do not ask me why that is so because I do not know the reason either."
..............................................
Lucien was naturally wary of the orange giant but he decided that humoring it was the safest thing to do. He replied pensively. "I am a vampire and I am called Lucien. Lucien Crimson."
The orange thing continued to regard him with its unchanging (°д°) face and he merely glared back. He didn't think he could move fast enough to escape from it without losing his mist and he wanted to be ready to put up some sort of defense if it decided to attack.
