Name: Korochi
Nicknames/Titles: Scales, Snake Eyes, The False Orochi (former, now unused), The Avatar of Orochi (self-given, otherwise almost unused)
Age: 50 (has been sealed for an unknown additional number of years)
Age Appearance: 11+
Race: Youkai
Gender: Female
Appearance:
Korochi is of medium height and build for her apparent age and her nose and ears are remarkably delicate given her rounded face (and the rest of her features).
The most striking part of her face is her pair of large golden snake eyes with their slit-like pupils and their bright red inner eyelids, which she has in addition to regular lids. She tends to blink with her inner lids, which most humans consider unusual and vaguely disturbing (partly because of their color but mostly because they open sideways). Her teeth all end in points but they aren't visible unless she smiles, unlike her fangs which stick downwards more than an inch from her upper lip when her mouth is closed (her lower canines are more normally sized though still pointed). Her hair is orange, short and quite unruly.
She wears an abbreviated hakama decorated with a dark green pattern resembling snake scales and a ruff of orange fur around the collar. She also wears wide cloth bands around her lower arms and calves, each decorated with a similar pattern and fur ruff as her hakama. She doesn't wear shoes but she does have a wide hairband bearing five snake heads and the green scale pattern.
She wears a large knife on her waist but she uses it as a tool and never as a weapon unless she is really desperate.
In her Orochi form she has dark green scales matching the pattern on her clothes, a yellow belly and an orange mane around each head. This form has five heads and five tails and both its heads and tails can reach more than ten feet from the ground when they are raised. Her total body length in this form is unknown even to her, but it is no greater than thirty five feet.
Personality:
Korochi considers herself a noble and courageous individual and desires to be a defender of the weak, which is unusual given her inspiration. She doesn't fear much and is always up for a challenge especially if there is fighting involved. Her primary obsession is the legendary Yamata no Orochi, the great Eight-Headed Serpent of Japanese myth, and she will drop whatever she is doing if she gets the chance to find out more about it.
Like most Youkai she tends to do as she pleases, eating, fighting and sleeping whenever she feels like it. She does respect the property of others (and the supernatural protection that property often has in Gensokyo) and she doesn't mess with anything that isn't hers. She enjoys conversation and likes making jokes although her sense of humor can be a bit morbid at times. It is easy to get favors out of her, as she enjoys being thanked for her services.
Likes:
- Meat, preferably raw.
- Sake. She is a formidable drinker but fate seems to conspire to keep alcohol out of her hands. It doesn't affect her as badly as it did the true Orochi but this is one difference she doesn't mind.
- Scaring people. What better use could she possibly find for all her extra heads?
- Spying on people... wait, that is a better use than the above.
- Fighting. It's fun.
- Snakes of all kinds, especially the poisonous ones. Don't ever dare ask her why.
Dislikes:
- Vegetables.
- Hawks, mongoose(s) (no, she doesn't know the right plural either) and anything else that eats snakes.
- Being reminded that she was once a normal snake Youkai.
- Small furry animals- not because she is scared of them but because looking at them makes her feel hungry.
Greatest Fear:
- Being crushed. It happened to her more than once before she became a Youkai (and once after, but that's another story) and is part of the reason she assumed her current state. This is also why she gets nervous when she is indoors.
Ambitions/Desires:
- Becoming a true avatar of the Orochi, including the sheer size and the full number of heads and tails. How can anyone crush something so big?
Weapons:
- Her knife could be considered a weapon but with the array of attacks at her disposal she doesn't use it in a fight. Besides, when did the Orochi ever use a knife in a fight?
Abilities and Fighting Style:
Ability:
Channeling the power of the Orochi (or so she claims)
Korochi can shapeshift into a much, much smaller version of the legendary Orochi with five heads and five tails. Each of its heads and tails can act independently, although each head usually takes charge of a corresponding tail. Perhaps unlike the true Orochi this form has difficulty moving, which is a problem as Korochi's version isn't big enough to defend itself by moving the earth like the original could. Plus, fewer heads means she has more blind spots and she cannot attack as many targets as the original.
She can choose to shift just one part of her body into a corresponding part of her Orochi form. Each of her limbs and her head can become an Orochi neck and head, giving that body part increased size, strength and durability. The heads are fully functional and can see, hear and smell (with their tongues of course) independently. All of the heads can eat, breathe and even sleep independently although they do not have their own minds. She can also sprout some or all of her tails out of her back if she chooses.
Her normal form is capable of flight and she can fly with two heads or tails (or one of each) out. Anything more than that and she will have to ground herself before transforming.
Fighting Style:
In battle, any of her Orochi heads can fire a magic beam or create a barrier. Her normal limbs and head have no such ability, however, and her tails lack magical powers as well, so she is forced to form and maintain at least one Orochi head if she needs magical powers. Like her inspiration she is slow but hits hard.
Unfortunately, each of her Orochi parts requires magic power to maintain and at her current power level assuming her full Orochi form prevents her from using any magic attacks. She therefore seldom has more than two heads or tails out at any point in a battle. While her Orochi heads and tails have massive strength, her strength in normal form isn't particularly great for a Youkai.
Strengths:
- Improved awareness: The natural result of learning to handle five of each major sense.
- Some leadership skills.
- Knowledgeable about the Orochi: Probably the foremost Orochi expert in Gensokyo, if her information is correct (BIG if- for one thing, her 'Orochi' form looks nothing like traditional depictions of the Orochi).
Weaknesses:
- Clumsiness: She tends to break things when in normal form and when handling anything with an Orochi body part all bets are off.
- Overconfidence: She tends to overreach herself in battle, especially when she thinks she has the advantage. If an opponent knows anything about feints her defeat is sealed.
- Slow movement: A regular human has a good chance of dodging her attacks in normal form and her Orochi parts are even slower.
History:
There once was a snake which lived a long and perilous life until it became a Youkai, as sometimes happens with ancient things and animals. Unfortunately for this snake it was poisonous and as usually happens with poisonous snakes humans kept trying to crush it whenever they found it. Most of the time they failed (barely) and once or twice they half-succeeded, but Fortune smiled on the snake at those times and it lived.
Naturally this snake began to conceive of a way to avoid getting crushed, becoming especially interested in tales of giant serpents as they could do some crushing of their own. One fateful day the snake heard the legend of the Yamata no Orochi, the biggest serpent of them all, and it finally had a goal in life.
It retreated into the mountains (which were quite magical in the days before the great barrier) where it somehow acquired more heads and more tails and grew much, much larger than any serpent (since the Orochi) had any right to be. Somewhere along the line it also learned how to take a human form, but since that was a secondary concern the snake never perfected the ability.
Well, humans soon came to live among the mountains and the snake decided to make an easy living by terrorizing them into offering it food, since none of them could possibly hope to crush it. Then one day a rather intelligent monk arrived at the village and got the people to collapse a cliff onto the poor (but now quite fat) snake, then sealed the whole pile with as many amulets and inscriptions as he could manage.
Thus the snake was forced to sleep for more than a thousand years, waking up every century or so to exhaust most of its power against its prison and force the humans living above the pile (yes, humans back then were that ignorant) to evacuate for fear of an earthquake. Each time this happened the local priests added new seals and the snake's struggles diminished until eventually it was silent.
It was far from dead, though, and the creation of Gensokyo and the strengthening of the Youkai therein all but ensured the snake's escape. One day two particularly irritated monsters were battling each other over the rock pile and their attacks smashed it open, freeing the snake which naturally had quite a bit of rage to vent. That was the end of the monsters but it was also the beginning of a legend: The legend of a young warrior who subdued (what he thought was) the offspring of the mighty Orochi.
Fortunately for the snake the battle left it close enough to death that the warrior assumed it was already there and he left it alone where it lay. Eventually the snake assumed its human form to conserve its powers and took the name 'Korochi' which was a corruption of 'Little Orochi', what the warrior had called it. The rest is history.
(Oh, and perhaps it should be mentioned that the snake was female...)
