Byakuren stood on the step of her temple, watching the snow gently fall on the landscape around her. It was... Quiet today. As it had been for the past few days. Her friends had been the only ones who came to the temple lately, just to visit her. Well, theoretically to help her as well, but things had been so quiet lately that she didn't even need it.
The snow... Was quite beautiful. Everything was white, and yet, somehow, it was so amazing... Perhaps it was because of the simplicity. A landscape, drawn in white. However, that was not what she paid attention to.
No, instead, she was looking at a single flower. One she held in her hand. It was... A white lotus. And it brought up so many memories. Her brother, Myouren... This had been his, all that time ago. For some reason, it never withered, though it should have crumbled to dust long ago. Had it really been over a thousand years since she'd seen him? And yet, every moment she'd spent with him, her beloved brother, was as fresh in her mind as if it had just happened. And she remembered the day that she'd learned he was dead...
"Byakuren?" The voice of her young friend pierced the silence. Byakuren looked up, smiling. "Oh, Alyssa, you've returned." However, her smile dropped when she saw that her friend's face was stained with tears. "What's wrong?"
Alyssa sounded agonized as she spoke. "It's... It's Myouren. He..." She shook her head, as tears began flowing from her eyes once again. "He's dead..." Byakuren's eyes widened at this news. "No... No, it can't be..." Alyssa looked miserable as she replied, "Unfortunately... It is."
She then explained what had happened. "We were on our way back here, when he said he felt tired. We set up camp for the night, but , in the morning..." She paused, as if she didn't know what to say. "He wasn't awake, though he's normally up early... When I went in to see him, he... He could barely talk. He said that he knew he wasn't going to live, but to give you this."
Alyssa took out a flower, a white lotus. "He said that he always kept it with him. It reminded him of you. But now, it can help you remember him." Byakuren took it, shakily. She couldn't believe this... This wasn't real... No. It was. But... Her brother...
A single tear fell from her eye, falling into the very center of the flower.
Just as she had cried in the past, she cried now. A single tear, falling into the flower, that to her, represented her past with her brother.
"Byakuren?" A voice interrupted her silent remembering. Just as one had interrupted the silence all that time ago as well. She looked up, and saw a woman with short, tiger striped hair step out from inside the temple. "Oh, hello Shou." Shou looked concerned however, "Why are you sitting out here? It's cold?"
Byakuren simply replied, "The snow is nice. And I was just... Thinking about things." Shou looked confused for a moment, until her gaze fell onto the lotus Byakuren was holding. "You know, mourning your brother won't bring him back. It's best to move on."
Byakuren shook her head. "I know. I just... I miss him. I know I shouldn't dwell on the past, and I keep trying to move forward, and do what I can now. But sometimes... I just can't help it." Shou was silent for a moment. Then, suddenly, she knelt down behind Byakuren, and wrapped her arms around her. "I understand."
Byakuren was startled for a moment, but then she said, "Thank you... You're a true friend... Shou..." More silence. A warm moment, between two friends. But then, Shou let go, and stood up. "Remember Byakuren, if you ever need to talk, I'm here." Byakuren nodded, and Shou walked away.
Once she was gone, Byakuren shook her head. "Yes... You really are a good friend Shou." She laughed slightly, sadly. "Maybe too good... Do I really deserve such friends? Or... Am I still the selfish girl I was all that time ago? Maybe... I can't judge myself. But... I'll still do my best." She looked up at the sky. At the single star that was visible, despite the fact that it wasn't yet nighttime. "That's all I can do... Thank you, Shou, everyone. I'm glad you're here with me..."
Byakuren knew her friends couldn't hear her from here. They were all off doing their own things. But... That didn't matter. She did feel gratitude toward her friends. The ones who had worked to release her from that seal... The ones who were still there for her...
However, something was still nagging at her, in the back of her head. She felt like she was forgetting something... Not about Shou, Nazrin, or any of the others. Not about Myouren. But about Alyssa, and someone else... What was it...?
