Mycen studied the tree carefully as he flitted around it. It looked healthy enough for his purposes, but then again he'd thought the same of the last two or three he'd tried. Even with all the magic coursing through the forest there just wasn't enough life in most trees to sustain the mushroom garden of his dreams. His first attempt had killed everything within ten feet of the tree as well, leaving a barren gray patch in the middle of the woods.
Something seemed to be different about this one, however, and Mycen had been improving his control with each attempt. His most recent try had only killed the top half of his victim, and while there wasn't enough left of that tree for him to try again it did give him the hope that he would be able to finish the job on his fourth attempt.
After looking around to make sure that no one else was present, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath before stretching his right hand towards the gnarly bark. "Fourth time's the charm... I hope..."
