Nicknames/Titles: The Girl of Knowledge and Shadow, The Great Unmoving Library, One-Week Witch
Age: Over 100 years old.
Age Appearance: Late-teens or early-twenties.
Race: Youkai (Magician)
Gender: Female
Appearance: [x]
- Height: Not too tall, but not too short; about five feet tall.
- Weight: Light for a woman of her size; about 100 pounds.
- Skin: Pale
- Hair: Long enough to go down her back, and purple. Patchouli wears her hair down with a pair of strands tied apart over her shoulders. The ribbons are purple and blue.
- Eyes: A deep shade of purple
- Build: Very lightweight
- Clothing: Patchouli usually wears a flowing pink robe over a loose pink dress with vertical purple stripes. Her hat is in the same color as her robe and the same simple design as used by others like Remilia and Flandre Scarlet. However, it is set apart by several blue and purple ribbons and a prominent yellow crescent moon on one side. She also wears pink slippers with light purple and yellow pompoms over plain white socks while at home at the Voile library.
- Distinguishing Features: Aside from things like her rare hair color and unhealthy look, Patchouli can be easily noticed by her unenergetic expressions and tone of voice.
Personality: Patchouli Knowledge has always been regarded as a recluse, and for good reason. Having shut herself inside the Scarlet Devil Mansion’s library for the better part of one hundred years, she has had little contact with those outside the mansion up until very recently. However, Patchouli is not shy or distrusting by any means; she simply doesn’t seek the companionship of others.
Preferring a quiet day in the library with some tea and a good book, Patchouli also devotes much of her time to studying and experimenting with various types of magic. Her contracted assistant, Koakuma, is usually a go-between for Patchouli, but she will act directly if she feels the need to.
While not a combative sort, Patchouli is certainly not a pacifist. She will always fight off intruders to her library and defend the other denizens of the Scarlet Devil Mansion if they come under attack. Patchouli does not usually begin battles, except for during times of crisis. She may attack in order to further a theory or line of investigation, and Patchouli will also attack if she thinks information is being withheld from her, even if by another member of the household.
- Positive Traits
Patchouli’s positive attributes include her resourcefulness, her ability to change the kind of magic she is using on the fly, and her strong will. Her magical abilities are great, and she can continue using powerful magic, even when not feeling her best.
Patchouli is also one of the more well-known intellectuals in Gensokyo, and she always maintains a calm and logical demeanor. Because of this, she is considered to be one of the greatest Youkai magicians in all of Gensokyo, and Patchouli does not take her title lightly.
- Negative Traits
However, Patchouli also suffers from both anemia and asthma, so she is not at her full fighting strength very often. As a result of her health issues, Patchouli is unable to keep doing most physical activities for very long.
Patchouli’s straight-logic and detail-oriented approach will sometimes make her miss the bigger picture of a crisis, such as during the Scarlet Weather incident. Her level-headedness makes her ability to relate to people very low, and Patchouli is sometimes even seen as cold or uncaring.
- Likes
Things enjoyed by Patchouli will always include books, from which she always studies. She has even written a number of grimoires herself, and her desire to study and create new magic is always high. She also enjoys fine teas and coffees to keep her going through the day, usually served by her assistant.
While she may not admit it, the stimulation Patchouli receives during a crisis that makes her decide to act is something she likes as well. Even less likely for her to admit is the fact that she enjoys having visitors stop into the library more often, although she certainly doesn’t see visitors and intruders in the same light.
It may seem that Patchouli’s nature would make her one to dislike physical styles of combat. However, while she is not a practitioner herself, Patchouli relishes a challenge and will enjoy finding new ways to utilize her magical abilities against any fighting style, magical or not.
- Dislikes
Patchouli’s dislikes are very much in tune with her health an personality, meaning that she would rather delegate most physical activities to her familiar. Even tasks like moving around her library are usually done with magic, meaning that Patchouli floats more often than walks.
Interruptions to her work are never appreciated, and those who would try to take her work out of the Voile library are usually met by heavy resistance. Because many of the book in the Voile are written by her or relics from the outside world, Patchouli’s most prized possessions are always well defended.
- Fears
Patchouli is not a fearful person by nature, but the thought of her hand-written grimoires being stolen, damaged, or destroyed always strikes a deep chord within her mind. Patchouli also fears that her illnesses will someday overtake her ability to perform magic, and she is constantly trying to obtain medical knowledge from the outside world that would combat her sickness.
- Desires
Keeping with her personality, Patchouli is not the kind of person who desires material objects. Her goals are always towards advancing her knowledge and magic, and learning new things. Perhaps she does not know it, but another desire of hers would be having more visitors to the Voile library, although her desire to protect her books tends to overpower this.
- Habits and Quirks
Patchouli’s usual daily routing consists of studying, drinking tea and coffee, and more studying. Somewhat of a habitual person, she will sometimes break up her study time to either write a book of her own or to test the results of her work with Koakuma.
Abilities and Fighting Style:
- Magical Abilities:
Patchouli‘s strongest magical abilities relate to the five elements of Taoism and Feng Shui, or the Wu Xing. However, she is also well-versed in many elements of magic, including demonology (as evidenced by her contracted succubus familiar, Koakuma).
Physical abilities:
- Patchouli has almost no physical abilities. However, she is known to pack a rather mean book slam when things get tough.
Weapons:
- While she does have some antique enchanted weapons, Patchouli‘s only true weapon is her large handwritten grimoire. While she has written a number of magical books over time, this particular tome undergoes constant revision as she masters new methods of combining her five elements in combat.
Fighting style:
- StrengthsThe strengths of Patchouli‘s magic-based fighting style revovle around her ability to keep her opponent(s) at a distance. While she can maintain a ranged advantage, Patchouli can pick an element that will be effective against her enemy to hit as hard as she ca before she loses her energy. If her enemy is not weak to a particular type of energy, she will choose her spells based on the day of the week.
- Weaknesses
While her magic is excellent at a distance, Patchouli has little method of defense against an enemy that can close it. While she enjoys a light challenge and does know a few trick to give her a chance to regain her ranged advantage, Patchouli will almost certainly try to avoid using any melee attacks during a serious fight.
History:
- Much of Patchouli’s background is unknown, aside from the obvious facts that she has been living in the Scarlet Devil Mansion’s library for at least one hundred years. However, her recent exploits are much more well-known. During the Scarlet Mist incident, Patchouli played a part in defending Remilia Scarlet from Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame. Not long afterwards, she is known to have tried to dissuade the pair of incident-solvers from battling Flandre Scarlet.
She is not mentioned again until the magic mist incident. Knowing that the suspected Remilia Scarlet was not to blame for the fog covering Gensokyo, Patchouli set out from her library for the first time to clear her friend’s name. She faced many residents of Gensokyo during this crisis, and faught against the perpetrator, Suika Ibuki. Similarily, she is mentioned in stories of the scarlet weather incident, but she incorrectly believed that Suika was to blame when the true villain was someone she had casually defeated, Tenshi Hinanai. This is also one of the most notable times Patchouli’s detail-oriented investigative methods failed her, since Tenshi had even said that she was plotting something.
Most recently, Patchouli is mentioned in texts on the Hot Springs incident. Believing that the evil spirits rising with the steam were a serious problem, but unable to go into the underground herself like the other Youkai, Patchouli was one of those to aid Marisa Kirisame’s investigation. While her participation was indirect, Patchouli was able to learn a great deal from Marisa’s journey.
