On X day of X year news of holiday commonly celebrated in the outerworld spread throughout the human village. It is called "Christmas," and it apparently celebrates the birth of a god's child. It seems this child is no longer alive, though I was unable to detirmine if he had any decendants or not. Since I was unable to talk to anyone from the outerworld, and the border youkai Yukari Yakumo is hibernating, I was unable to find out why they continue to celebrate his birth centuries later, though I think it's fair to assume it's because he did exceptional things during his life time.
This holiday takes place on the 25th of the 12th month of the year. That would mean that it takes place in mid Yayoi, however I understand that this place actually takes place during the winter. I base this on many of the traditions that the outworlders have. Having a "white Christmas" seems to be very important to them. The white refers to snow, and it only snows during the winter. I was unsure of how to detirmine the exact date, so I did the next best thing. Here in Gensokyo at the shrine at the top Youkai Mountain, there is a shrine maiden that is also decended from a god. I flew to the top of the mountain and asked her when she was born.
"Hm? My birthday? It's in mid-Shiwasu. Why do you want to know?"
So, Christmas is in Shiwasu according to the shrine maiden Sanae Kotiya (human).
The traditions of Christmas are just as strange as the reason the outworlders celebrate it. Apparently they light a tree on fire and place gifts underneath it. At first I thought these gifts might be sacrifices to their god, but upon further investigation I discovered that these gifts are actually for the giver's friends and family! It is also common for people to give cookies, fudge and other sweets to their friends and family. However, the holiday is much larger than that. The outworlders put up giant burning trees in public places, and several areas put up farm scenes as well. This holiday is so important to them that most people don't even have to work on Christmas. They also put up smaller fires and lights on their homes and other buildings, so I wonder if the real reason they get the day off is because Christmas is such a fire hazard that they have to spend all day putting out fires.
After learning this much about it I decided it sounded like a grand holiday, and thought it would be fun to a Gensokyo Christmas celebration. I can set up a celebration on the mountain, however I doubt the other tengu would allow anyone to attend. We don't really like it when outsiders come onto our mountain. I didn't want the rest of Gensokyo to miss out on such a great event, so I spoke to the shrine maiden Reimu Hakurei (human).
"Whaaat? You want me to cut down a large tree, drag it all the way back here, BY MYSELF, and set it on fire?"
I simply nodded. The conversation just went downhill from there. I thought she would love the tradition about drinking too much of this alcohol known as "eggnog," but shockingly enough she didn't seem very excited.
Does this holiday sound as wonderful to you as it did to me? Would you be interested in setting up the burning tree and decorating the rest of the town? Then do so, and I, Aya Shameimaru, will be more than willing to help you!
