Hoshigaru is about six feet tall and is muscular with broad shoulders. He has short black hair which is usually dishevelled, black eyes, pointy ears, a broad nose and a square chin. To put it simply, he looks like a dock worker. He also has dark, leathery skin. He dresses in a torn gi with baggy pants.
Personality:
Like most other elder Youkai Hoshigaru tends to simply ‘exist’, choosing to eat, sleep or fight whenever he feels like it. Sometimes he uses his powers to cause trouble for his own amusement but most of the time he minds his own business.
He is normally calm and level headed and is difficult to provoke but his actions are guided more by whim than by logic and thus he can be unpredictable. He is quite intelligent, if not too wise, and has much knowledge about how things were before the creation of Gensokyo. Unfortunately, much of that knowledge is obviously outdated. The one thing that is always true of him is that he doesn’t attack anything if it doesn’t attack first, although he is fond of provoking humans and other Youkai into attacking so he can fight back.
Abilities and Fighting Style:

Hoshigaru has the ability to control desire, from which he gets his name. He can cause the following effects:
1) Creating a new desire in any number of beings at once.
2) Removing an existing desire from any number of beings who share it.
3) Increasing an existing desire in any number of beings to the point where they may be overwhelmed.
4) Reducing an existing desire in any number of beings to the point that it may disappear on its own.
Limitations:
- Cannot make beings act on their desires. Beings driven by responsibility, intelligence etc. may ignore or fight their desires.
- Cannot predict what a being already desires before he uses his power or their response to a desire. This may make the results of his power unpredictable.
- The ability is iconic. Most of the elder beings of Gensokyo can trace his power back to him, usually punishing him when they find him.
Hoshigaru receives power when other beings act on their desires, regardless of the object of those desires or the method they use to achieve them. However, the amount of power he receives is small unless he is somehow involved in those desires (e.g. a being desires to defeat him).
Fighting Style:
*Weapon: A massive axe taller than himself, with a crude design and a rusted appearance. Its handle curves at one end.
*Combat style: Freestyle. He has no knowledge or appreciation of martial arts and uses his hands and feet as often as he uses his axe. He is also not above biting an opponent if necessary. He possesses the natural fighting skills of most stronger Youkai, enhanced by centuries of experience.
*Advantages: Strength and speed equal to the strongest Youkai in Gensokyo, if not greater. Can jump to extreme heights and distances. Capable of cutting danmaku and other energy attacks like physical objects, but they may blow up if they are powerful enough.
*Disadvantages: Cannot fly and cannot use danmaku.
*Special Attacks: Grand Cleaver is a massive energy wave fired from his axe. This wave is large and powerful enough to split a small hill with a single hit. However, since it is extremely power-consuming he only uses it to protect himself from danmaku he cannot cut or avoid.
*notes:He once had a vastly more powerful form, but since his sealing he has not been able to achieve that level of power.
History:
Hoshigaru is one of the oldest of Youkai, having been active long before the creation of the Great Hakurei Barrier. During that time, the land that is now Gensokyo was the site of many wars between Youkai and humans.
Back then, Hoshigaru used his true form and was known by his full title, causing various wars and skirmishes among humans and Youkai in Japan both for entertainment and to maintain his powers. However, he was eventually sealed in a cave by a band of unknown heroes, with assistance from other Youkai who felt that he was a nuisance. He took more than a thousand years to break loose and he then found himself in the new land, stripped of most of his power.
Strengths:
- Extremely fast and strong.
- Can destroy danmaku with physical attacks.
Weaknesses:
- Cannot fly in normal form.
- Cannot use danmaku in normal form.
- Desire control is not very effective against most of the strongest beings in Gensokyo.
- Has no knowledge of the spell card system and is ignorant of recent developments in Gensokyo.
- Has difficulty collecting enough power to assume his true form and will probably never be able to do so again.
