Katrina woke up. Another day of turning windmills...what was the point? It was just going to turn and turn and turn... Never stopping... Well, it couldn't stop. Or something bad might happen. No matter what, Katrina had to keep turning that windmill. Well, she got up and got her working clothes on. Then she went outside and pulled a rope so the windmill would keep turning. Katrina checked the windmill. There. She began to dust.

Somewhere above the girl a pair of ears twitched as the windmill picked up speed. The owner of these ears had chosen to spend the night on the roof as the sound of the windmill seemed strangely calming to her. When the rope was pulled, however, the sound changed. As small a change as it was, it was enough to disturb the sleeper.
Seeking to silence the noise, Carmellia pulled her (stolen) carpet over her ears, curled up and rolled onto her left side. When that didn't work she tried rolling onto her right side, which of course didn't do much. She finally tried rolling onto her stomach but ended up crossing the edge of the roof in the process and she dropped onto the ground with a painful (and rather loud) thud.
Now wide awake and quite angry, the Youkai looked around until she spotted the source of all her troubles. Deciding that it would trouble her no longer, she opened her mouth and began charging a shot. When she was done it would hopefully be large and powerful enough to destroy the windmill so that she could resume her sleep in peace.

Katrina had had no idea that a youkai had taken to sleeping on the roof of her house, so she did not know what this one was doing here. And the youkai seemed quite angry too, so Katrina knew she should be careful. "Hello," she said. "Please do not stop this windmill. Have you heard of the legend?"

The girl's voice surprised Carmellia enough to make her bite her bullet, causing it to burst in her mouth. Fortunately for the Youkai it wasn't too far beyond the normal power level and the blast only managed to scorch the inside of her mouth and knock out a couple of her front teeth. She spent a couple of seconds coughing smoke and panting to cool her mouth before turning to glare at the girl, and some more time passed before she could speak.
"What legend?" She asked, clearly showing her impatience. "Make it good or leave me alone. I need my beauty sleep."

Beauty sleep? And why was she glaring? Had Katrina said something mean? "I'm sorry if I...offended you," Katrina said. "Anyway, they say that if this windmill stops turning something bad will happen. Now part of me knows that that's just some ridiculous myth, but the other part of me believes. So...I'm not gonna risk it." Of course, she had no idea what the youkai girl was doing here or why she was acting so hostile. "And one more thing," Katrina said. "Please don't think I'm your enemy or anything. I'm just a...windmill girl." And with a sigh, she added, "I'm not that important."

It was a ridiculous myth indeed. There wasn't even a single juicy detail or trace of morbidity to inspire belief. Humans certainly were dumb creatures. Carmellia was amused by the girl's willingness to hold on to something so trivial without thinking it through. Well, someone would have to do the thinking in this case and the Youkai was sure she had enough brains for them both.
"Look, kid. I'll do us both a favor and test this 'legend'. If anything bad happens I'll get all of it and if nothing bad happens you'll be free from this shack and I'll be able to go back to sleep. Happy endings for both of us. Now if you'll excuse me..."
Without waiting for the girl to reply, she braced herself and fired a shot towards the windmill.

Katrina gasped. "Wait! That's not just a cursed windmill, that's also my house--" Too late. The top part of it keeled over into the grass. Katrina held her breath. Something was going to happen! She waited...and waited...and waited... "Whew! It's okay!" But then she asked herself, did it really have to happen right when the windmill stopped turning, or would it simply come when she least expected it?

Carmellia smirked and her reply was tinted with sarcasm. "Of course it's okay. Look, I know that people do get struck by lightning and stuff for various little things but 'stopping a windmill' isn't one of them as far as I can remember. The more you know..."
She looked around until she spotted her carpet and grabbed it before flying up onto what was left of the roof. After cleaning a spot for herself she spread the carpet out and lay down to resume her sleep but unfortunately the sounds of the rest of the village kept her awake. Then her stomach growled.
Grumbling under her breath, she crawled over to the edge and shouted for Katrina to fetch her some food. It would be the girl's payment for Carmellia's little favor.

The girl wanted some food? That was a harmless enough request. Katrina picked two large watermelons from her garden and handed one to Carmellia. Then she spoke. "You know, this was kind of my house, so I kind of need it to be fixed..." How silly that sounded! She giggled. But seriously, she couldn't have no...house. Without a house, she would be without a bed, a kitchen, a living room, and a long list of more things you'd expect to find in a house. Unfortunately, Katrina herself had no skill in fixing things. She could garden and she could turn windmills, but that was about it.

Carmellia took the watermelon and sat down with the fruit in front of her. She thought of looking for a knife but her stomach demanded her attention again, so she simply stuck her fingers into the thick skin and ripped the fruit in half. In the process she managed to squirt watermelon juice over herself but she barely noticed it as she buried her face in the juicy red flesh. The taste was top-class, meaning that the windmill brat was at least a good gardener and not completely useless.
The Youkai was actually halfway through the first chunk when she heard Katrina's voice again and she decided to shut the girl up before continuing. "Excuse me? Do I look like the village builder or something? Find someone who actually gets paid for this sort of work and let me eat in peace."

Katrina was indeed shocked by how rudely the youkai had reacted. She went into her ruined kitchen and got a knife. With it, she sliced her melon. Then she went outside to eat it. "I'm really sorry if I offended you," she said to Carmellia. Really, why was she so mad? Everyone needed shelter.

Carmellia finished off her watermelon as the windmill girl came out again. She tossed the skin aside, wiped her face with her sleeves and stretched out on the ground where she was. While she could certainly eat more, her stomach was silent for the moment and so she didn't bother. Feeling contented (for once), she closed her eyes and prepared to go back to sleep.
The girl's question made her open her eyes again. The Youkai was beginning to feel just a little annoyed with this talkative human but she figured that she could spare just a bit of courtesy in exchange for the meal.
"Offended?" She replied, not bothering to sit up. "Of course not. Why should I be offended? Listen, in exchange for the food I'll tell you my name. It's Carmellia."
She closed her eyes, hoping that the girl wouldn't bother to reply. "Now you know more about me than most people deserve to, so treasure it. Good night."

Wait a minute, she didn't even know Katrina's name yet! "Excuse me Carmellia, my name is Katrina." That was all she said. Now, to (try to) repair the house... She began to gather the pieces of the wall. Oh, what was the use? She couldn't build things. She had to find someone else to do it. With a huge sigh, Katrina sat down.

Carmellia opened one eye when the girl spoke again but she didn't answer. Katrina, huh? Kind of plain but then again she isn't too special. Oh well. At least she's not talking anymore.
With that thought, she slowly closed her eye and drifted off to sleep. She didn't snore as such unrefined behavior was beneath her, but she slept so silently and with so little movement that others might believe she was dead. Strangely enough she wasn't a deep sleeper and the slightest sounds could wake her unless they were the sounds that put her to sleep in the first place.

Katrina looked over at Carmellia again. Perhaps if she offered the youkai something in return she would help fix the house. Knowing this, Katrina tapped Carmellia's shoulder. "Hey?" she whispered. "If you help me fix my house, I will get us both some catfish. What do you think?" It would seem fair to the youkai, Katrina thought. After all, something WAS in it for her.
